Elephant Medallion Pendant

African savannah

The African Savannah is the main ecosystem of the central and western part of the African continent. It involves the equatorial forest and ranges from the outskirts of the Sahara Desert to the Kalahari Desert and northern South Africa. The savannah is formed by herbaceous vegetation with alternating shrubs and trees. It is the habitat of most of the great animals of Africa, among them the Elephant and the Rhinoceros. The abundance of food attracts herds of herbivores such as antelopes, zebras, giraffes, among others. Herbivores are the food base of the most well-known African predators such as lions, leopards, hyenas and crocodiles. Among the most important and known savannah reserves we have the Masai Mara and the Serengeti. The savannas suffer intensely from human interference. Extensive areas of this ecosystem are used as pasture and agriculture. Intensive grazing eliminates vegetation, turning the savannah into a desert. Many animals are threatened with extinction due to loss of habitat and illegal hunting such as giraffes, rhinos, lions and elephants. This stretch of territory, full of life, catches the attention of visitors and biologists as well as being inspirational to artists and photographers. It was also the inspiration for the shell-shaped necklace pierced with images of the sun and the large African herbivores, the elephants.
